KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE THIS CHRISTMAS

The holiday season is packed with activity and alterations to the normal routine. Giving thought to keeping the family safe, prevents unnecessary incidents hampering holiday happenings.

Dodging Decorating Disasters

Certain guidelines need to be followed when adding holiday decor to the home. Caution must be used when climbing a ladder to hang exterior lights off gutters and trees. Having another adult present to assist and take action should a fall occur is ideal.

Candy canes and other edible items often adorn trees. Children may tip the tree over when attempting to snatch items from the tree. Children unattended around the tree may choke on items removed from the tree including small ornaments.

Practicing Fire Safety During the Holidays

  1. Fire-resistant artificial trees are the ideal tree. The fresh tree scent is appealing to many, leading them to purchase real cut trees every year.
  2. Real trees become very dry making them burn easily. Certain precautions safeguard against tree-related fires during the holidays.
  3. Trees should not be placed near radiators or fireplaces. These heat sources dry the tree out faster.
  4. If possible, a freshly cut tree should be purchased when available as they do not dry out as fast.
  5. Lights used should be UL-certified to ensure they have gone through durability and safety testing.
  6. Used lights should be inspected to locate any broken bulbs or frays in the wiring.
  7. No more than three standard light sets should be plugged into an extension cord.

Safe Holiday Travel

  1. Rushed holiday travelers must practice safety when driving. In inclement weather, it is vital to slow down and pay full attention to the road. Drivers in vehicles beginning to skid on the ice must drive into the skid and not forcefully apply brakes.
  2. Keeping an Empty Home Safe from Theft
  3. Thieves take full advantage of more homes being empty due to holiday travel.
  4. Having someone drop by the house to collect mail and newspapers makes the house appear lived in. Using lights on timers and motion lights deters criminals from entering the home illegally.
  5. People not traveling during the holidays put themselves at risk for robbery when leaving boxes of high-end items on the curb. This advertises to thieves what new, expensive items are in the home. Boxes from televisions, gaming systems, and computers should be cut and placed in a covered recycling container.
  6. Staying safe at home and while traveling is paramount to a successful holiday season. Taking necessary precautions reduces the risk of an incident occurring.
